Jonathan Heusman asked:

It is a regular fixation get acne in their teenage days. Many others will know acne during their grown days as well. So what is it that causes acne? Pimples themselves originate from bursting of oil ducts, which results in reddishness and swelling. Although there are numerous reasons for acne, the following are the three main factors that will cause it. There is no particular reason to why acne is started, but it is believed by doctors that many factors contribute to it. One of the most important factors is an increase in male sex hormones. During puberty more and more hormones are secreted.

Those hormones; androgens in particular, grow in both males and females, and increase oil production in the skin ducts. This is what causes acne. Genes are a vital role in kids will have acne as well. This has been deduced through research. If you are susceptible to acne, the ducts in the skin tend to get larger and produce more oil, causing the ducts to become plugged. This then leads to the formation of blackheads or whiteheads due to the oil in your skin. This in turn becomes the breeding place for germs and causes bad effects and damages the skin to a great extent, thus resulting in the black and white heads.

Some other causes that can cause acne include friction caused on the skin due to various factors such as wearing helmets, hats, etc. Exposure of skin to pollution is also a large factor which is harsh on the skin and results in breaking down of the skin leaving it open to acne attacks. Acne can be aggravated due to harsh rubbing, which leads to breakage of pimples and blemishes. It is necessary to take proper care of the skin. Failing to do so can many times result in severe acne problems. It is advisable to follow certain procedures in order to prevent acute acne. Pinching or piercing pimples should be avoided as it can result in breakage of oil ducts which affects the nearby areas in your skin and often causes more and more pimples. Items such as jewelry, headbands, or heavy makeup, are hard on the skin and causes rashes, so should be avoided. They may cause irritation, redness and swelling. If you are using any cosmetic cream and ointments, care should be taken that they do not block the oil ducts in the skin. If these ducts become blocked due to some harmful chemicals, thats when the skin gets irritated.

While taking any medication which affects the hormonal cycle, care should be taken too, as this may aggravate the acne. Stress and tension are also major contributors to acne related problems. Acne is not contagious. It will not spread if you touch someone who has acne. Acne is not only caused by food habits, but is related to our lifestyle in general. Its a combined result of our lifestyle. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will help you to avoid acne. I personally have my own success story with a very unique natural method I found. Be sure to check out my blog to find out more about that.

Jojo Michelle asked:

1. Will eating foods like chocolate or peanuts cause an acne outbreak? Medically speaking, no, have i have observe peculiar instances in individual cases. Test yourself. If you get a breakout 10 times out of 10 when you eat a certain item, cut it out.2. Should pimples, blackheads and whiteheads be extracted? Extracting pimples is a no-no as the pressure applied to the skin may extend inflammation to other areas of the skin. You can extract blackheads using a blackhead extractor but you have to ensure the extractor is placed at an angle that is 90 degrees to the skin surface.3. Does stress cause acne? Stress can worsen acne through the release of increased levels of hormone which form the adrenal glands which in turn over-stimulate the oil glands.4.Do facials work in targeting acne and removing acne scars? A Bella Skin Care spokesman said that regular salon treatment helps by controlling sebum production, healing existing acne scars and minimizing pores. Dr Chee Yew Wen, medical director of Wen & Weng Medical Group said that for mild acne, facials do help, depending on what beauty salons do. For instance, micro dermabrasion and mild chemical peels can help unclog pores. Depressed scars, however, are harder to improve and require stronger lasers done by doctors. Extraction should be reserved only for comedones (Blackheads and whiteheads). Moderate to severe acne, especially of pimple are inflamed and contain pus, should be treated by doctors where oral medication is usually required.5 Does blotting frequently worsen acne as it encourages more oil to be produced in the skin? Whether you blot or not, the body will still produce oil in the skin. “It’s not scientifically proven that blotting frequently encourages more oil to be produced. Its all right to blot.6. Does washing your face more often get rid of acne? It depends on what you use. If you have a lot of whiteheads and blackheads, choose something which contains alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs). If you have inflamed acne with bumpy skin, use a cleanser which can kill bacteria. Simple washing twice a day is more than enough. Over-washing in fact can worsen acne.7. Can you wear make-up if you have acne? It is best to stick with established brands. Its also advised to use non-comedogenic make-up.But if you have make-up on, it is important to thoroughly remove it later as make-up can clog pores. i recommend using mineral-based make-up which is less comedogenic. There have been cases of vicious cycles where the more acne a person gets, the more she tries to cover it up with make-up and the more make-up blocks the pores. If you have to wear make-up, don’t wear it for prolonged periods.8. Does sex or masturbation cause acne? All the doctors I spoke to said there was no data to suggest that sex or masturbation causes acne.9. Does having large pores mean you will have acne? Large pores refer to the pore size and are unrelated to having pimples or acne, although enlarged pores generally mean the person is susceptible to oil skin conditions and is prone to acne outbreaks. People who have acne tend to have larger pores so the condition goes hand in hand.10. Does tanning help to clear up acne? Tanning only mask acne by evening out the skin color temporarily. Skin may become dry and irritated after a tan which can prompt an acne outbreak. If you go under the sun a lot, use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 15, and which is non-comedongenic, that is, which does not tend to clog pores.

Dr John Anne asked:

Acne is a common inflammatory skin disease that involves pimples, primarily on face. Acne specifically occurs in teenagers and young adults sometimes causing them embarrassment, even psychological stress as well. Poor diet, stressful life, and hormonal changes are a few reasons for acne breakout. Also, incorrect use of beauty products or using poor quality acne skin care products can aggravate acne.

You can try using some natural or home remedies for mild acne, if it is initial stage and you see an occasional whitehead or a blackhead. However, if your acne is moderate, you should see a dermatologist and seek proper acne medication, before it gets severe. A doctor generally refers a few acne creams, and guides you on using acne skin care products. A variety of acne products are available at medical stores. Some of these are good to cure acne, and while others help you prevent acne.

There are many OTC medicines that people take for acne. This may be a good option for initial stage but if your acne is getting worse, seek proper acne medication. The dermatologist examines the symptoms and gives you prescribed medicine for effective treatment and cure. Apart from treatment, you should change your diet plan and avoid foods that can cause acne or that slow the recovery process.

Most often, the acne products contain benzoyl peroxide and some antibiotics. These help the affected area to dry out, and take care of acne scar as well. Many acne creams and lotions that you use for treatment contain vitamin A. However, you may feel some irritation or itching on your skin when you begin the treatment. Use a good quality skin moisturizer for in such cases. In case of severe acne, you may also require to take oral acne medication. Many prescribed medicines eliminate the reasons that can cause acne. Generally, these help you fighting against the bacterial infection that leads to acne.

Sometimes, a medicine has its side effects as well. Discuss with your doctor, if you notice any rashes on skin, or some stomach problem, and seek any alternative medicine, or some medicine to counter the side effects of acne medication. Research has shown that a few acne medicines may cause malformation of the teeth; and a few others can cause changes in the color of the skin. Your skin may get dark, or lighter than its normal color.

A few other common side effects are as below.

• Your hair may lose their natural color, and may turn white.

• You may notice skin allergy.

• There may be blisters or some swelling over affected areas on skin.

• In some cases, you may also see burning or redness of skin.

Some doctors recommend that you should not take calcium supplements, or any laxatives while you are taking acne medications. Select your acne skin care products carefully, and if possible, use only those products that are prescribed or recommended by your doctor.

Washing your face is the most important factor that contributes to early recovery. Wash your face to revoke any oils or dirt from your face and do not apply any make up or cream while going to bed. It enables your skin to breathe which is very important for a healthy and fresh skin. Do not touch, prick or pierce your pimples as it may leave permanent scars on the skin. Let them heal naturally or though acne medications, and the scars will automatically disappear over a period of time.

Sometimes, a few medicines are not recommended for special cases such as for a pregnant women and patients of Hansen’s disease. Also, the patients of asthma, hay fever or those who have a weak liver are also advised against using some particular acne products. In such situations, discuss all the symptoms with your dermatologist, along with any medication that you are already taking. You may require some different acne creams or medication in such cases.

While purchasing acne products, read the instructions carefully. See the manufacturing and expiry dates of products, and read how to use those. There may be instructions that require that you should not expose your skin to sunlight after applying a specific acne cream. Following the instructions properly will help quick acne treatment and cure.

Apart from traditional acne medications, you can control acne using herbal products as well. The advantage with using herbal products is that these do not cause any side effects, though sometimes, the recovery process is slow. Even if you are taking traditional medicines, you can take herbal and natural treatment for acne, simultaneously. However, consult with your doctor before using a herbal product since it may hinder the effectiveness of prescribed medicines. Also, take required precautions in your diet and lead a positive and stress free life style.

Medical Care For Acne - 3 Reasons To See A Doctor

Abhishek Agarwal asked:

For both adolescents and adults, acne can be an aggravating problem. There are many variations of acne and differing degrees of severity. The physical, emotional and psychological effects can be devastating, affecting an individual ’s confidence, self-image and self-esteem for many years. Although several of the milder types of acne respond well to over-the-counter treatment products, more severe forms require medical attention. Acne care is vitally important regardless of the type, but it is just as vital to know when a case of acne requires a dermatologist to treat it.

Three Reasons To Consult A Physician

The decision to see a physician or dermatologist about your acne should take into account several things:

1. Is your acne causing you emotional difficulties?

2. How severe your outbreaks are.

3. If your skin seems to be scarring when the lesions heal.

There are several more reasons why it may be wise to seek professional help with your acne but these three comprise most of them. Severe acne may leave permanent scars; seeking medical help early on may help to reduce the effects of scarring. The best way to prevent scarring is, of course, to prevent acne from occurring in the first place. The right skin care regimen and possible dietary changes, are needed to control acne breakouts.

Recent studies have shown that food sensitivities may contribute to the formation of acne, such as allergies to wheat, dairy and certain fruits. One such study has shown that women consuming three or more glasses of milk per day were 22% more likely to have acne breakouts than women consuming only one glass of milk per day. This may be due to the hormones present in fresh dairy products, but some dermatologists are recommending that their patients with cystic acne avoid mild products and use alternative sources of calcium intake. The type of acne and skin type plays an important role in how acne is best treated.

If you have cystic acne, also known as nodulocystic acne, it must be treated by a physician. Do not try to treat it yourself because it can cause very painful lesions and scarring of the face, neck, back and shoulders. Cystic acne resembles small bumps or tumors, blackheads may not be present with it, sometimes the lesions fill with a combination of blood and pus, cystic pimples may involve more than one pore, and they are very deep within the skin layers. This type of acne should be treated by a dermatologist as quickly as possible, in addition, some dietary changes may be needed to decrease the outbreaks of this type of acne.

Emotional distress, such as severe anxiety, depression or social reclusiveness, are also good reasons to seek professional assistance. Severe acne sufferers feel helpless to control the situation particulary for adultsdue to the notion that acne should clear up once a person becomes an adult. Acne scarring has long term effects, often affecting a person’s choice of occupation, social interactions and dress. A medical professional can help to restore a person’s self confidence as well as helping clear up the acne.

For men, sever acne can shaving difficult. Shaving irritates pimples and lesions, may irritate existing scars and lead to further outbreaks of acne. A good razor, shaving creams and other products help to reduce the irritation and inflammation of acne, but a medical professional can also prescribe creams and medications to eliminate it.

It may be a good idea to visit a dermatologist at the outset of acne, even if you aren’t sure that it is a severe form of acne. Medical advice can help in the choice of skin care products, provide assistance regarding acne care and daily routines even if prescription medications aren’t required. In severe cases of acne, a physician is indispensable to help reduce the effects, treat the cause and prevent future outbreaks.
