It is still unknown how acne forms into the different acne types. What science can tell us right now is that when the sebaceous glands produce excess sebum (oil), it can mix with the dead skin cells and dirt in the skin. This mixture becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. The dead skin cells, dirt and sebum clog up the skin pores. They the manifest themselves as reddish blemish on the skin surface, and this is what we know as acne.

Acne that is close to skin surface are what we know as whiteheads and blackhead, non-inflammatory type of acne. Acne that is painful to the touch and swell up, on the other hand, is the inflammatory type of acne. These are the pimples or zits and they can leave scars since they go beyond the top layer of the skin.

Acne scars vary from person to person. This is because people have different facial topology. Thus, one person with acne scars can have just shallow imperfections (acne scars that are not so deep), another person may have “ice pick” scars (acne scars that look like chickenpox scars), and another person may have deep acne scars.

To date, there is still not a lot of information and research done on acne scars and how they form. Thus, acne scar treatments are not surprisingly limited. Acne scars and their treatment then needs to be addressed on a case-by-case basis. There is not a single acne scar treatment that works for everyone. If you have acne scars, you’ll need to talk to your dermatologist or a cosmetic surgeon to find out what procedure or treatment is most appropriate for you.

A number of treatments for removing acne scar are available, and the treatment type depends on the type of acne scarring. Again, it’s best to talk to your dermatologist and find out which acne scar removal treatment (or even a combination of treatments) is the best for you.

Below are a few of the acne scar removal treatments available today:

* Dermabrasion

With this treatment, the skin is numbed or frozen. A machine removes damaged skin to make way for new skin growth. Dermabrasion is not the same as microdermabrasion. The latter wont remove acne scars.

* Laser resurfacing

This acne scar removal treatment uses laser to remove old skin that has been damaged to allow new skin to grow. Laser resurfacing is becoming very popular, and is promising to surpass dermabrasion as the treatment of choice when it comes to acne scar removal.

* Chemical peel

Chemical peeling is an acne scar removal method wherein the top layer of the skin is removed by applying acid or chemical. The procedure allows for a new smoother skin layer to grow.

* Punch

This acne scar removal method is recommended for people who have deep, pitted scars. The procedure involves removing the scar and the wound closed so that it can heal. This method has three techniques: punch excision, punch replacement and punch elevation.

* Subcision

This acne scar removal method involves detaching the acne scar from the deeper tissues. This lets a pool of blood to form under the acne scar and clot. The blood basically helps in the formation of connective tissues under the scar so that the acne scar area comes up level with the skin surface.

* Augmentation

In this acne scar removal method, the acne scar is injected with a material, either collagen or one’s own fat, with the goal of bringing the scarred skin to surface level.

Four Methods To Remove Acne Scars

Filed under: 1375 — Tags: , , — admin @ 4:09 pm
Flor Serquina asked:

The usual causes of acne scarring may often be attributed to late, inadequate or failed methods of treatment, where the skin infection was allowed to progress before any treatment was used. The most common root cause of acne scarring is inflammatory nodular acne or nodulocystic acne, where lesions go deeper into the skin, affecting the surrounding tissue. The damage, when healed, results in a scar.

Another cause for acne is the manipulation of the pimples. People who press, prick or squeeze their pimples damage the skin, causing tearing and bleeding. This manipulation can also lead to further skin infection, aggravating the acne and producing unnecessary scars. There are also certain areas of the face that can suffer more from acne breakouts. The temples, for example, may not recover as well as cheeks do because there is less circulation in those areas.

Removing Acne Scars

Acne scars, once they are fully healed, can naturally reduce in size and become less noticeable as time passes. This usually works for scars that are mild to moderate but in more severe cases of acne scarring, even time may not be enough to produce the desired results. To remove acne scars, certain treatments and procedures might have to be utilized.

Treatments for removing acne scars

It’s still best to prevent scars from happening because it’s usually very difficult to repair them once they have appeared, especially if they are the result of a severe case of acne. However, if acne scars have already appeared, there are methods that may be used depending on the type of acne scar and on the severity of the condition.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a common cosmetic procedure used to even out the skin and remove bumps and red spots. This method of acne scar removal is essentially like ’sanding’ the surface of the skin to remove the dermis or the topmost layer. It can effectively smooth out the skin and reduce the appearance and size of the acne scars.

Probably the only drawback to dermabrasion is that it can be quite expensive, with procedures ranging from $1,500 to more than $2,000.

Medications

Some topical medications, such hydroxy acid, may be used to remove acne scars. In some medicated facial treatments, a chemical called AHA or alpha hydroxy acid combined with Vitamin C, some amino acids and other nutrients, may also be used. These chemicals are applied on the skin to produce a mild peeling effect. AHA preparations help increase tissue healing and regeneration and also encourage the production of collagen. However, they do make patients more sensitive to sunlight.

Another common treatment for the removal of acne scars is the application of Vitamin A-derived retinoids, sometimes in the form of retinol or as retinoic acid. Retinol is alcohol-based and can help restore the skin’s moisture. Retinoic acid, on the other hand, tends to dry the skin. However, retinoic acid is more effective in producing smoother, firmer skin. It is also more capable of evening out skin tone.

For mild to moderate cases of acne scars, medications can usually remove acne scars although they often cause skin redness and dryness. Significant improvement usually takes some time because skin should be allowed to heal before the medication is applied again. This method of acne scar removal can cost anywhere from $200 to a little over $1,500.

Skin resurfacing

For this method, laser is often used to remove acne scars. Using pulsed beams of high energy carbon dioxide laser, acne scars can be superficially removed and reduced. The result is a much improved area of skin.

Skin resurfacing is actually one of the safest and most effective methods of removing acne scars. This is also used to treat patients who have adverse reactions to acne medications. Skin resurfacing usually works better with newer scars than with old scars. It is as expensive as dermabrasion and sometimes, it can even cost more. It also requires a longer recovery time.

Surgery

To remove acne scars that have developed raised, excess skin, a surgical procedure may be utilized. This procedure involves excising the skin, removing the areas that show bumps. This is often the preferred method of doctors who have patients with very deep acne scars.

Peter sams asked:

The term ’scarring’ means a fibrous process in which new collagen is laid down to cure an injury. It is basically common in acne conglobata and acne fulminans. It can also be a long term result of infantile acne. Acne breakouts are caused by a various environmental, gene, and age factors, even stress. Acne or pimples affects almost everybody.

Acne scars can be desolating to their self esteem and outward appearance. In the easiest terms, scars form at the site of an injury to tissue. They are the discernible reminders of injury and tissue repair. In the case of acne, the injury is caused by the body’s inflammatory retroaction to sebum, bacteria and dead cells in the plugged sebaceous follicle. Many individuals will deal with aplomb issues due to their scars.

Post acne scars is one of the universal cosmetic problem and consequent from neglected acne or improper treatment. Post acne scars are absolutely a preventable condition which could have been prevented by simple advise from your dermatologist. It is now not as easy to efface these permanent scars , pits and blemishes.

After an acne lesion has healed, it may leave a red or hyper-pigmented mark on the skin. This is actually not a scar, but rather a post-inflammatory variation. Acne scar removal can be by dermabrasion. This is a technique where the top layers of the skin are removed with the use of a machine which literally excoriates the skin. Chemical peels are one more choice for acne scar removal. This works much the same as dermabrasion, but instead of machinery, chemicals are used to abrade the top layer of skin.

Acne removal laser treatments are comparatively painless, have no down time, and are should only be executed by experienced medical staff. Laser acne treatments normally last between fifteen minutes and one hour. There is no pain or down time for this maneuver. Acne scar removal is treated in much the identic way as fine line and wrinkle removal.

Lasers encourage new collagen growth, filling scars from the inside out. Brown and red discoloration left from acne scars are removed by treatments same to the removal of pigmented lesions and vascular lesions. Another drastic acne scar removal approach is punch grafts. This is a process where small skin grafts are taken and used to supersede scarred skin. This acne scar removal technique is usually used to remove deep acne scars.

Treatment for Acne scars

· Micro-dermabrasion is an acne scar treatment alike to dermabrasion but a suction tool is used with a rude tool or crystal blasting tool.

· Punch grafts is a procedure for removing scars. These are small portions of skin that are taken from one part of your body and inculcated where deep holes have occurred.

· Steroid injection directly into the scars may sometimes result in scar improvement. Doctors combine the steroid injects with surgery to reduce the size of scarring, but that is in selected patients.

· Chemical peels are often used to minimize sun-damaged skin, irregular pigment, and superficial scars.

· Soft tissue fillers is used to elevate depressed scars. A small amount of bovine collagen, collagen-related fillers, polymer implants or a patient’s own fat is interlarded below the surface of the skin, raising the depressed area.
